Shareholders in Gentrack Group (NZSE:GTK) are in the red if they invested three years ago

Every investor on earth makes bad calls sometimes. But you have a problem if you face massive losses more than once in a while. So take a moment to sympathize with the long term shareholders of Gentrack Group Limited (NZSE:GTK), who have seen the share price tank a massive 75% over a three year period. That would be a disturbing experience.

So let's have a look and see if the longer term performance of the company has been in line with the underlying business' progress.

See our latest analysis for Gentrack Group

Given that Gentrack Group didn't make a profit in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually expect strong revenue growth. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.

Over the last three years, Gentrack Group's revenue dropped 0.7% per year. That's not what investors generally want to see. The share price fall of 21% (per year, over three years) is a stern reminder that money-losing companies are expected to grow revenue. This business clearly needs to grow revenues if it is to perform as investors hope. Don't let a share price decline ruin your calm. You make better decisions when you're calm.

A Different Perspective

We regret to report that Gentrack Group shareholders are down 20% for the year. Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 11%. Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. Unfortunately, longer term shareholders are suffering worse, given the loss of 11% doled out over the last five years. We'd need to see some sustained improvements in the key metrics before we could muster much enthusiasm. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. For example, we've discovered 1 warning sign for Gentrack Group that you should be aware of before investing here.
