Share the Season helps woman unable to afford funeral expenses

Angela and Robert had been together for more than twenty years. They enjoyed their leisure time and lived modestly on Social Security retirement funds. Robert had been suffering from a chronic disease and over time his condition worsened. One day Robert was gone.

Angela was devastated. Not only was she reeling from the loss of her longtime partner, but there were immediate, unexpected costs. Unfortunately, Robert and Angela had not been able to save toward final expenses. They lived on a fixed income. Angela had applied to transfer Robert’s Social Security benefits to her, but the transfer would take time. She didn’t have time. Robert’s body was being held by the county coroner, and the coroner wanted him moved. Angela had to act quickly.

Unsure where to turn for help, Angela connected with her local Salvation Army Church. She spoke with the Corps pastor, who counseled her and referred her to the Share the Season program. The caseworker was able to help Angela with the funeral expenses. Now she could grieve in peace.

Share the Season, now in its 22nd year, is a partnership between the Wichita Eagle and The Salvation Army. Since its inception the program has helped over 3,900 families through community contributions. This year The Salvation Army will lead the fundraising effort and manage the financial component of the program. They will also provide case management by meeting with people, reviewing their financial situation and trying to find the help they need. The Eagle shares the stories with the community, both to create awareness for those who can benefit from the program and to generate financial support.
