  • Shane van Gisbergen was the first driver in Modern NASCAR history to win in their debut last year at Chicago. He has since proven that his skill in the new racing distance is not a fluke, with multiple wins in the Xfinity series and one-off runs in the Cup.

  • He was heavily favored to go back-to-back both in the Grant park 165 and on the weekend already securing the Xfinity series victory in The Loop 110 Saturday afternoon.

  • Van Gisbergen's day ended when he was tagged by Chase Briscoe in the same wet conditions that made him unstoppable last year.

The majority of the field pitted to put on wet-weather tires after Shane van Gisbergen won the first stage of the Grant Park 165. On the restart on lap 25, there were two separate incidents caused by heavy spray and quickening rain, the second of them collected last year's winner. Bubba Wallace got turned around while running in the top five, collecting the No. 99 of Daniel Suarez. A few laps later, Chase Briscoe lost control and slammed into the tire barrier. Unfortunately, he tagged van Gisbergen in his crash, junking the No. 16 Trackhouse entry.

"I turned in, and it looked pretty good, and then just got smashed by someone," van Gisbergen shared with NBC. "It's gutting. The Wendy's Saucy Nuggs Camaro was really good. We were in the lead for much of that race, and it felt good taking up in the rain."

After watching the recap, he was able to see the mistake that Briscoe made and softened some.

"That sucks; it's an unfortunate mistake by him," van Gisbergen added. "I'm sure he didn't mean it, but he clipped me, and there was nothing that I could do."

The New Zealand-born driver exited the vehicle; his race and chance to go back to back in Chicago this weekend was over.

After these two crashes, the rain picked up profusely, the red flag was waved, and air titans deployed to try and reclaim the track.

Before the incidents, NASCAR informed the teams and fans that the race would end at 8:20 PM local time if not completed earlier.
