See Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth II pose with great-grandchildren in rare new photo

The official Instagram account for the British royal family shared a rare photo of the late Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth II with their great-grandchildren.

The photo, posted Wednesday, shows the couple smiling on a green couch surrounded by seven of their ten great-grandchildren. According to the caption, the picture was taken by Duchess Kate in 2018 at Balmoral Castle in Scotland.

All of the couple's great-grandchildren are pictured, except for the three who were born after. They are Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan's 1-year-old son Archie, Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank's 2-month-old son August and Zara Phillips and Michael Tindall's newborn son Lucas.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge also took to their own Instagram account on Wednesday, sharing a 2015 photo of themselves and their children Prince George and Princess Charlotte with Philip and the queen.

In the days leading up to Prince Philip's funeral on Saturday, the official Instagram account for the royal family has shared several pictures of the Duke of Edinburgh, along with tributes from relatives.

On Monday, the account posted a picture of Philip in a carriage with his great-grandson Prince George, now 7. The post's caption contained a tribute from Prince William.

William remembered his grandfather Philip as "an extraordinary man."

"I will never take for granted the special memories my children will always have of their great-grandpa coming to collect them in his carriage and seeing for themselves his infectious sense of adventure as well as his mischievous sense of humour!" he added.

Prince Philip has died. A look at the British royal family tree, spanning four generations.

Philip's death on April 9 was a personal loss to Queen Elizabeth II, whom he had been married to for over 70 years, and a substantial one: Most British historians and commentators believe Philip was one of the keys to the queen's enduring (69 years and counting) success as a monarch.

The queen herself famously described him as her "strength and stay."
