The Scotiabank Photography Award Presents Its 2016 Longlist

Shortlist to Be Announced March 9

TORONTO, ON--(Marketwired - January 28, 2016) - Today, Scotiabank proudly presented the nominees for the 2016 Scotiabank Photography Award.

The winner of the Scotiabank Photography Award will receive a cash prize of $50,000, a major solo exhibition at the Ryerson Image Centre, and a primary exhibition at the 2016 Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival. In addition, a book of their work will be published and distributed worldwide by Steidl of Germany.

They have provided the Jury Panel with excellent candidates for this year's longlist," said Edward Burtynsky, Chair of the Scotiabank Photography Award jury. "Each one of these distinguished artists has a distinctive body of mature work which reflects a high level of excellence in contemporary Canadian photography."

Founded in 2010, the Scotiabank Photography Award is designed to provide support to a mid to late career artist as he or she reaches for the next level of national and international recognition.

Scotiabank's commitment to photography was recently underscored by the Bank's $10 million donation to the National Gallery of Canada for the creation of the Canadian Photography Institute.

The longlist represents Canadian photographic artists chosen by an eminent panel of nominators:

  • Claude Baillargeon, Associate Professor of Art History, Chief Academic Adviser, Department of Art and Art History, Oakland University, Rochester, Michigan;

  • Penny Cousineau-Levine, Art Writer and Theoretician (photography), Professor at the University of Ottawa, Director and Graduate Program Director, Department of Visual Arts, Ottawa, Ontario;

  • Dr. Louise Déry, Director, Galerie de l'UQAM, Université du Québec à Montréal, Montréal, Québec;

  • David Diviney, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Halifax, Nova Scotia;

  • Susan Dobson, Visual artist and Associate Professor in the School of Fine Art and Music at the University of Guelph, Ontario;

  • Barbara Fischer, Executive Director/Chief Curator, Art Museum at the University of Toronto; Associate Professor, Teaching Stream, Master of Visual Studies - Curatorial Studies Program at the Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design at the University of Toronto, Ontario;

  • Martha Hanna, Independent Curator of Photography, former Director of the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography (1993 - 2010), National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, Ontario;

  • Mark Lanctôt , Curator at the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal, Montréal, Québec;

  • Kenneth Montague, Art collector, Founder and Director of Wedge Curatorial Projects, a non-profit arts organization, Toronto, Ontario; and

  • Lori Pauli, Curator, Photographs Collection, National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, Ontario.

The Scotiabank Photography Award Jury is composed of pre-eminent members of the Canadian arts community. The members of the jury are:

  • Robert Bean, Professor, Nova Scotia College of Art & Design University (NSCAD), Artist, Writer and Curator, Halifax, Nova Scotia;

  • Catherine Bédard , Deputy Director of the Canadian Cultural Centre, Art Historian, Paris, France; and

  • Robert Enright, Professor and University Research Chair in Art Theory and Criticism, University of Guelph, Ontario, and Senior Contributing Editor Border Crossings Magazine, Winnipeg, Manitoba.
