Savannah James talks meeting LeBron James, sons' NBA dreams: 'I’m their biggest fan'

Savannah James is having a proud mom moment.

James, the wife of Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James, opened up about her family in a cover story for Cut magazine that describes Savannah James as the family's "MVP" and "matriarch."

"I am most proud of the humans whom I’ve created," James said. "They are amazing. They surprise me every day just with how intelligent and kind and amazing they are. I pat myself on the back, as well as give high-fives to my husband, because I tell him all the time, 'We did that. We did that.'"

Bronny, 18, recently committed to play college basketball at USC, which LeBron James called "one of the best days of my life." Bryce, 15, is entering his junior season of high school ball at Sierra Canyon in Los Angeles, while daughter Zhuri, 8, has her own YouTube channel and is fully "in her basketball era. She loves it."

Although both her sons have followed in their famous father's footsteps, James said she would've supported any dream they had: "I’m happy for them. Listen, I want nothing for them except for their happiness. That’s it. In whatever it is that they decide to do, I’m here supporting and rooting for them. I’m their biggest fan always. If they decide to go the NBA route or a different route, whatever that is, I’m here."

James, 36, grew up in Ohio and met LeBron James in high school. Their first date was at Outback Steakhouse in 2002 – he thoughtfully returned her leftovers after she accidentally left them in the car after their date – and the couple tied the knot on September 14, 2013. James said she "didn’t know that (her husband) was going to be what he is today."

"We were two kids who started dating, as any two high-school kids would," she recalled.

When asked who she likes watching play basketball more, James was torn between her husband and children: "Listen, I’m ten toes down with my husband — always. But I enjoy seeing my boys become who they want to be and just seeing them do what they enjoy. I would say it is a toss-up now."

James credited her "super-understanding, amazing, positive" parents with shaping her parenting style with her children. She added that she takes pride in holding down the fort at home while her husband plays professionally.

"I was given opportunities to make mistakes and work through them. I was an athlete, so I was given the opportunity to express myself in the ways of sports, and they let me jump off the walls and do all of the things, so a confidence in that and a freedom in that, which I also give my kids," she said. "It’s very nice to hear that the sacrifices that you’ve made and the work that you’ve put into making sure that our children are raised properly and that he has a stable environment that’s full of love and good vibes and all the things."

In 10 years, James said she envisions herself "supporting my kids to the highest level of whatever it is that they’re doing" alongside her husband, who will "hopefully (be) retired by then," she joked.

James, in his 20th NBA season, and the Lakers lead the Golden State Warriors 3-2 in the Western Conference semifinal series. Game 6 is in Los Angeles on Friday.
