Sausage maker recalls 53,000 pounds of salami, pepperoni, other meats over listeria concerns

More than 26 tons (52,914 pounds) of ready-to-eat sausage products made by Daniele International LLC, a Rhode Island-based company, are under recall because they may be contaminated with listeria, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Sunday.

The recalled meat was sold under a number of brand names, as Italian and Spanish style charcuterie platters or salami, the USDA said.

Retail stores nationwide received shipments of the products from about Dec. 23 to Jan. 17, according to the USDA, which said it was concerned the products may have found their way into a consumer’s fridge.

So far, no adverse reactions were reported.

Listeria monocytogenes

The USDA said it discovered listeria monocytogenes on surfaces that had come into contact with the recalled products. Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that can cause a potentially serious infection known as listeriosis, which can cause symptoms such as diarrhea, fever and other flu-like symptoms, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

Listeriosis poses a greater threat to people who are pregnant, elderly people and those with weakened immune systems, the CDC said.

Left to fester, listeria infections can cause miscarriages in pregnant people. Roughly 1,600 people become ill from the bacterium each year, and about 260 die, the CDC said.
