Samsung reportedly plans to sell 100M Galaxy S IV phones, could pull resources away from Apple

Samsung’s (005930) next-generation Galaxy S IV is expected to be its most successful smartphone yet and according to a new report, it might be so big that it pulls resources away from Apple (AAPL). In a note to clients on Thursday, Jefferies & Company analyst Peter Misek wrote that Samsung plans to build 100 million units of its upcoming flagship Android phone. According to the analyst, Samsung’s component and manufacturing needs for the Galaxy S IV will be so tremendous that it will pull resources away from Apple’s iPhone.

“The enormous 100 million S4 build plan (we estimate the S3 sold 60M) is leading some suppliers to say that they will reallocate resources away from Apple,” Misek wrote in his research note.

The news comes at a time when Apple may already be facing manufacturing issues with its next-generation iPhone. An earlier note from Misek stated that the company’s suppliers are having difficulties building the larger display for the “iPhone 6,” which could push the phone’s launch back to 2014.

Whether or not the rumor is true, Apple is reportedly still planning to release two new smartphones this year: An updated “iPhone 5S” and a cheaper iPhone model with a brand new design.

Misek also estimates that Samsung will have sold about 60 million current-generation Galaxy S III units when all is said in done. The company confirmed in mid-January that it had sold 40 million units up to that point.
