SaltWire Newspapers To Stop Publishing Print Editions On Mondays

Four daily newspapers published in Atlantic Canada by the SaltWire Network will cease publishing print editions on Mondays beginning October 17.

Going forward, digital only editions will be published on Mondays of the Chronicle Herald in Halifax, Nova Scotia; the Cape Breton Post in Sydney, Nova Scotia; the Guardian in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island; and the Telegram in St. John's, Newfoundland.

Each of the four publications is the leading daily newspaper in their respective city.

SaltWire said rising costs are to blame for it stopping print editions of the newspapers on Mondays. However, the switch to digital only will not impact newsroom staff, the company said.

SaltWire added that the Monday print editions typically generate the least amount of advertising revenue.

The move by SaltWire follows a similar one made by Postmedia, which announced that its newspapers in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Ottawa, and Montreal would stop publishing Monday print editions beginning on October 17.

SaltWire added that it has plans to expand its weekend newspaper editions, notably on Saturdays.

The Telegram in Newfoundland stopped publishing a Sunday edition in 2008, and the Chronicle Herald in Halifax stopped publishing a Sunday edition of its newspaper in 2013.
