Plenty of space for child seats and a five-star rating from NHTSA sound appealing, but adding almost all of the Enclave’s active-safety gear requires upgrading to an expensive trim-something that may discourage some buyers.

Crash Test Results

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the nonprofit, independent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) evaluate vehicles for crashworthiness in the United States. NHTSA assigns cars an overall rating out of five stars. IIHS uses a different set of tests, grades cars on a scale of Good to Poor, and awards the vehicles that perform best across its tests with Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ honors, the latter of which requires that the subject’s automated forward-collision-braking system performs well.

IIHS hasn’t tested the new Enclave, but both the front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive models earned five stars from NHTSA.

Airbags, Child Seats, and Spare Tire Location

Both of the Enclave’s second-row captain’s chairs are ideal for child seats. The LATCH anchor points are easy to access, and the flat nature of the lower cushion allows for immediately level installation of the seat base. The Enclave’s spacious passenger area means there’s plenty of room for a rear-facing child seat behind even a tall driver or front-seat passenger, which ensures everyone remains comfortable.

Active Safety Features

If you’re looking for the latest in active-safety equipment, you’ll have to pay for it with the Enclave, because only rear parking sensors are provided as standard. The one-rung-up Essence trim gets blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. Upgrading to the Premium trim adds front parking sensors, low-speed automated emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, forward-collision warning, and automatic high-beams. To get adaptive cruise control and automated emergency braking that works at any speed, buyers are forced into the most expensive Avenir model and also required to purchase the $2095 Avenir Technology package.
