** Wall Street has closed the books on 2022, with its main indexes suffering their worst years since 2008
** Adding to the pain, S&P 500 and Nasdaq extended their losing streaks to four weeks
** SPX finished the week with a loss of 0.14%, the month with a 5.9% retreat, the quarter with a 7.1% rise, and the year with a 19.4% slide
** Indeed, it was a pretty wild year with the benchmark index registering 122 trading days with an up/down change of more than 1%, the most since 134 in 2008
** For 2022, energy was the only sector to post a gain. SPNY surged 59%, for its biggest yearly gain ever; communication services was the biggest laggard, falling 40.4% for its worst year ever
** Growth underperformed value for the first time in six years. It was growth's worst year relative to value ever
** Dow Industrials fell 8.8% in 2022, while the Nasdaq suffered a 33.1% collapse. The small-cap Russell 2000 declined 21.6%
** In terms of individual SPX stocks, Occidental Petroleum , aided by Warren Buffett's interest, was the top performer, with a 117% surge. Generac Holdings was the biggest loser, giving up 71% of its value
** FANGs were hit hard. NYFANG slid 40.1% as Tesla and Meta Platforms both suffered their worst years ever
** Amid a frigid IPO market, self driving tech firm Mobileye Global Inc was a rare bright spot, finishing 67% above issue price after being spun out of chipmaker Intel Corp . This as bankers brace for another tough year ahead after new issuance activity plummeted
** And crypto winter bites: stocks freeze in 2022 as bitcoin crash weighs, with the biggest blow coming after major crypto exchange FTX filed for bankruptcy in Nov
