Returns At O-I Glass (NYSE:OI) Are On The Way Up

Did you know there are some financial metrics that can provide clues of a potential multi-bagger? Firstly, we'd want to identify a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and then alongside that, an ever-increasing base of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. So on that note, O-I Glass (NYSE:OI) looks quite promising in regards to its trends of return on capital.

What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?

Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. The formula for this calculation on O-I Glass is:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.10 = US$712m ÷ (US$9.4b - US$2.6b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2024).

So, O-I Glass has an ROCE of 10%. That's a pretty standard return and it's in line with the industry average of 9.8%.

What The Trend Of ROCE Can Tell Us

O-I Glass has not disappointed with their ROCE growth. Looking at the data, we can see that even though capital employed in the business has remained relatively flat, the ROCE generated has risen by 36% over the last five years. So it's likely that the business is now reaping the full benefits of its past investments, since the capital employed hasn't changed considerably. The company is doing well in that sense, and it's worth investigating what the management team has planned for long term growth prospects.

What We Can Learn From O-I Glass' ROCE

To sum it up, O-I Glass is collecting higher returns from the same amount of capital, and that's impressive. And since the stock has fallen 30% over the last five years, there might be an opportunity here. With that in mind, we believe the promising trends warrant this stock for further investigation.
