Returns On Capital Are Showing Encouraging Signs At Select Energy Services (NYSE:WTTR)

If we want to find a potential multi-bagger, often there are underlying trends that can provide clues. Amongst other things, we'll want to see two things; firstly, a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an expansion in the company's amount of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. With that in mind, we've noticed some promising trends at Select Energy Services (NYSE:WTTR) so let's look a bit deeper.

Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?

Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. To calculate this metric for Select Energy Services, this is the formula:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.049 = US$48m ÷ (US$1.2b - US$231m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2022).

Thus, Select Energy Services has an ROCE of 4.9%. Ultimately, that's a low return and it under-performs the Energy Services industry average of 9.9%.

So How Is Select Energy Services' ROCE Trending?

While the ROCE isn't as high as some other companies out there, it's great to see it's on the up. The figures show that over the last five years, ROCE has grown 12,580% whilst employing roughly the same amount of capital. Basically the business is generating higher returns from the same amount of capital and that is proof that there are improvements in the company's efficiencies. The company is doing well in that sense, and it's worth investigating what the management team has planned for long term growth prospects.

Our Take On Select Energy Services' ROCE

To sum it up, Select Energy Services is collecting higher returns from the same amount of capital, and that's impressive. Given the stock has declined 50% in the last five years, this could be a good investment if the valuation and other metrics are also appealing. With that in mind, we believe the promising trends warrant this stock for further investigation.
