Return Trends At Envista Holdings (NYSE:NVST) Aren't Appealing

If you're looking for a multi-bagger, there's a few things to keep an eye out for. Firstly, we'll want to see a proven return on capital employed (ROCE) that is increasing, and secondly, an expanding base of capital employed. Put simply, these types of businesses are compounding machines, meaning they are continually reinvesting their earnings at ever-higher rates of return. However, after investigating Envista Holdings (NYSE:NVST), we don't think it's current trends fit the mold of a multi-bagger.

What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?

For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. The formula for this calculation on Envista Holdings is:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.056 = US$327m ÷ (US$6.6b - US$781m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2023).

Thus, Envista Holdings has an ROCE of 5.6%. Ultimately, that's a low return and it under-performs the Medical Equipment industry average of 9.6%.

How Are Returns Trending?

Over the past five years, Envista Holdings' ROCE and capital employed have both remained mostly flat. Businesses with these traits tend to be mature and steady operations because they're past the growth phase. So don't be surprised if Envista Holdings doesn't end up being a multi-bagger in a few years time.

What We Can Learn From Envista Holdings' ROCE

In a nutshell, Envista Holdings has been trudging along with the same returns from the same amount of capital over the last five years. And in the last three years, the stock has given away 45% so the market doesn't look too hopeful on these trends strengthening any time soon. In any case, the stock doesn't have these traits of a multi-bagger discussed above, so if that's what you're looking for, we think you'd have more luck elsewhere.

One more thing to note, we've identified 1 warning sign with Envista Holdings and understanding this should be part of your investment process.
