Yahoo Finance Report: Lincoln MKC Replacement to Be Called Corsair
Lincoln will christen the next-generation MKC the Corsair, according to a report in Automotive News. The replacement for Lincoln’s compact crossover SUV was reportedly shown at a dealer event in Orlando, Florida, where it was presented with the Corsair nameplate. Ford filed to register the Corsair name with United States Patent and Trademark Office in August 2017.
The Corsair name has history as both a nautical and an aeronautical term, with its origins dating back to the 16th century as a French word for “pirate.” Four centuries later, the name Corsair was applied to a World War II fighter plane. Both fit nicely into the brand’s current naming scheme for its SUVs, which tend to have a nautical and aeronautical bent.
As recent spy photos of the MKC replacement show, the next Lincoln compact crossover SUV is well into its development cycle, with the vehicle’s design appearing to be fully fleshed out. Underneath the Ford Escape–based model’s heavy camouflage, we can spot telltale Lincoln cues such as a full-width taillight integrated into the liftgate, turbine-style wheels, and a massive grille situated between slots for a pair of thin LED headlamps.
The Lincoln MKC just underwent a thorough facelift for the upcoming 2019 model year, so we don’t expect to see the Corsair in Lincoln showrooms until 2020 at the earliest.
