Mandy Moore turns 40 on April 10, 2024, and though many recent fans know her best for This Is Us, true followers remember her 1999 bop "Candy," which hit No. 41 on the Billboard charts following its release.

The song — and its album So Real, which went Platinum — put Moore on the map, leading to her very first Teen PEOPLE sit-down in 1999, too. Obviously, much "Moore" followed.

Here, read the multi-hyphenate's first Teen PEOPLE interview, from that October's Now! What To Check Out This Month column, in its entirety.

There must be something in the water in Florida, because the Sunshine State is turning out pop stars faster than you can say "Top Forty."

The newest addition to the club: fifteen-year-old singer Mandy Moore, a tutored-on-the-road high schooler who's proud of her Orlando heritage.

"I love Backstreet and *NSYNC," she says. "Please don't make me choose!"

Mandy's also a lifelong Madonna wannabe. "I used to dress up like her," she recalls, "ripped jeans, biker shorts, a bandanna in my hair." Soon, though, it'll be Mandy who's sitting in the trendsetting seat. Having already treated *NSYNC fans to a sweet taste of"Candy" — the bouncy single she's been promoting on the Fab Five's sold-out summer tour — she's set to release her debut disc this month.

Now, if only Mandy could get over the bitterness that "Candy" has left in her mouth.

"It reminds me of my ex-boyfriend [whom I] ended up breaking up with because I knew it wasn't good," she says sadly. But the emotional baggage came in handy in the studio, where she turned in a heartfelt performance. "It made it a little bit easier to have him on the brain," she admits with a smile.
