Read This Before Buying EcoSynthetix Inc. (TSE:ECO) Shares

We've lost count of how many times insiders have accumulated shares in a company that goes on to improve markedly. On the other hand, we'd be remiss not to mention that insider sales have been known to precede tough periods for a business. So before you buy or sell EcoSynthetix Inc. (TSE:ECO), you may well want to know whether insiders have been buying or selling.

What Is Insider Buying?

Most investors know that it is quite permissible for company leaders, such as directors of the board, to buy and sell stock in the company. However, most countries require that the company discloses such transactions to the market.

Insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing. But it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing. For example, a Harvard University study found that 'insider purchases earn abnormal returns of more than 6% per year.'

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At EcoSynthetix

The Senior Vice President of Operations, Edward van Egdom, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for CA$372k worth of shares at a price of CA$1.86 each. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of CA$2.84, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. While insider selling is not a positive sign, we can't be sure if it does mean insiders think the shares are fully valued, so it's only a weak sign. This single sale was 56.2% of Edward van Egdom's stake.

In the last twelve months insiders netted CA$770k for 364k shares sold. In the last year EcoSynthetix insiders didn't buy any company stock. The chart below shows insider transactions (by individuals) over the last year. If you want to know exactly who sold, for how much, and when, simply click on the graph below!

EcoSynthetix Insiders Are Selling The Stock

The last three months saw significant insider selling at EcoSynthetix. In total, insider Ralph De Jong sold US$212k worth of shares in that time, and we didn't record any purchases whatsoever. Overall this makes us a bit cautious, but it's not the be all and end all.

Does EcoSynthetix Boast High Insider Ownership?

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Based on our data, EcoSynthetix insiders have about 1.1% of the stock, worth approximately CA$1.9m. I generally like to see higher levels of ownership.

What Might The Insider Transactions At EcoSynthetix Tell Us?

An insider sold stock recently, but they haven't been buying. And even if we look to the last year, we didn't see any purchases. Insiders own relatively few shares in the company, and when you consider the sales, we're not particularly excited about the stock. We'd certainly think twice before buying!
