Raley’s boutique downtown Sacramento grocery store 5-ONE-5 to close in early 2022

The Raley’s Market 5-ONE-5 grocery store in Sacramento will close next month, less than four years after its grand opening, a casualty of “significant changes” to the downtown economy brought on by the coronavirus pandemic.

A small, boutique-style market located at 915 R St. and focused on healthy local food, Market 5-ONE-5 opened in 2018 on its namesake date: May 15, which is also Raley’s CEO Michael Teel’s birthday. “ONE” stands for Organic, Nutrition and Education.

Raley’s spokeswoman Chelsea Minor confirmed in an email to The Sacramento Bee on Tuesday that Market 5-ONE-5 will close Jan. 7.

“We have made the difficult decision to close Market 5-ONE-5,” Minor wrote. “After nearly four years, there have been significant changes in nearby office occupancy downtown, including an absence of daytime workforce, as well as stalled development of urban housing around the store location.

“For these reasons, we have had to assess the future of this concept and location.”

Many office employees previously based downtown have worked been working remotely since March 2020 due to the pandemic.

Market 5-ONE-5 marked the first major new grocery store built on Sacramento’s downtown grid in decades.

The supermarket chain and city officials expressed hope that the store — which is managed separately from the rest of the Raley’s chain using separate vendors, many of them local farmers — would help anchor the burgeoning R Street corridor.

About one-fifth the size of a traditional supermarket, Market 5-ONE-5 is within a block of Fox & Goose Public House and the Warehouse Artist Lofts, and six blocks away from the Ice Blocks.

Future plans for the property were unclear.

“All team members will be offered employment at the same or equivalent pay and benefits in other locations within the portfolio of stores,” Minor wrote.

After four years, Raley’s 5-ONE-5 market in downtown Sacramento will close, officials said.
