IBM releases new AI models for businesses as genAI competition heats up
"Granite 3.0" models will be made open-source, similar to other versions in IBM's Granite family of AI models. This approach differs from rivals such as Microsoft that charge customers for access to their models. Some variants of the new Granite models are available starting Monday for commercial use on the Watsonx platform.

The frantic scene after an aluminum gangway collapsed Saturday at a boat dock on a Georgia barrier island capped what was supposed to have been a day of celebration, an annual festival spotlighting the culture and history of Sapelo Island's tiny Gullah-Geechee community of Black slave descendants. Seven people died and three others remained hospitalized Sunday, said Walter Rabon, commissioner of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Saturday was one of the busiest days of the year on largely unspoiled Sapelo Island, about 60 miles (100 kilometers) south of Savannah.

Early results show 50% of Moldovans vote 'yes' at referendum on EU aspirations
Half of Moldovans voted "yes" in Sunday's referendum on the country's EU aspirations, early results showed, putting the small nation tugged between East and West on a path towards joining the single market despite pressure from Russia. At 0300 GMT on Monday with 97.66% of the vote counted, 50% of Moldovans voted "yes", according to results given on Moldova's Central Election Commission's website. Hours earlier, partial results had shown 57% unwilling to commit to joining the EU.

The issue, and what to do about it when western countries are increasingly loath to send money overseas, is a key topic at the IMF World Bank autumn meetings taking place in Washington, D.C. this week. "It's a challenge in the sense that for many, debt service has grown, borrowing has become more expensive, and external sources (have become) less certain," said Christian Libralato, portfolio manager with RBC BlueBay.

Voters remain largely divided over whether they prefer Republican Donald Trump or Democrat Kamala Harris to handle key economic issues, although Harris earns slightly better marks on elements such as taxes for the middle class, according to a new poll. A majority of registered voters in the survey by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research describe the economy as poor. About 7 in 10 say the nation is going in the wrong direction.
