Polestar's New Concept Moves the Brand Closer to an Electric Sports Car

Polestar Is Getting More Serious About PerformancePolestar

Despite the weary effects of a breakup with Volvo and the challenges that come with launching two new models at once, Polestar has been keeping itself in the hunt lately. And even if we were slightly disappointed by the Polestar 4, the Polestar 3 represents a shining example of just how right the Swedish-born, Chinese-owned company can get it.

However, Polestar has primarily mostly focused on vehicles aimed at stylish, performance-curious commuters and families alike. But, with a proud history of proper performance tuning behind it, it's only natural for us to wonder what a sports car from Polestar would be like. And we may have the answer soon enough, as Polestar teases its Polestar Concept BST at the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Building on the Polestar 6 Concept revealed in 2022, the Concept BST is a proper drop-top sports car — with some fancy aerodynamics and body work to boot. Muscular fender flares, an extra-wide track, 22-inch forged alloy wheels, and a tall rear wing make up the visual features of the Concept BST. Polestar is being coy about its powertrain and handling details, however.

"Goodwood Festival of Speed is full of the most exciting cars and the most enthusiastic crowds, so it’s the perfect place for us to tease our Polestar Concept BST," said Thomas Ingenlath, CEO of Polestar. "This car is a demonstration of how far we can push our performance brand — Polestar turned up to 11 if you will — and a demonstration of how we could apply the BST formula to our lineup in the future."

While Polestar says the reveal of the Concept BST is the first of its type, its shared heritage with the Polestar 6 indicates we may see some cross-over in power figures and performance. Additionally, with such a focus on performance numbers, carrying over the electric motors making the claimed 884 horsepower and 663 lb-ft of torque from the Polestar 6 would certainly fulfill that goal. Copying the Polestar 6's alleged 0-60 -mph time of 3.2 seconds and 155-mph top speed wouldn't be too shabby, either.

The Concept BST will likely also ride on the bonded aluminum Polestar Performance Architecture featured on the Polestar 6, which shares its development technology and timeline with the incoming Polestar 5 super sedan. Notably, MG beat Tesla, Polestar, and a number of other legacy and startup brands to the jump on building an electric roadster, but the proof will be in the weight and handling pudding for enthusiasts. For a taste of what that could look like, Polestar will run its Polestar 6 concept up the 1.2-mile Goodwood Hillclimb later this week.

Polestar has yet to reveal production plans or pricing for the Polestar Concept BST. That said, the Polestar 6 is supposed to arrive at dealerships at some point next year, so we wouldn't be surprised to see it arrive sometime after that...
