Performance-Oriented Honda Civic Type R Hatchback to be Sold in the U.S.

This week at the 2016 Paris Motor Show, Honda took the wraps off its next-generation 2018 Honda Civic Type R Prototype. The sporty, sleek, compact Civic hatchback is dressed in a brushed-aluminum finish and features muscular design elements including aggressive fascias, extended wheel arches, and a rear wing. It was developed by Honda’s R&D teams in Europe and Japan and will be produced in the UK. News reports suggest that it will reach U.S. shores next spring.

The next-generation Civic Type R will also be shown in North America at the SEMA show in Las Vegas later this year, although it will be officially unveiled next year, according to Honda officials. This marks the first time that the Type R will be sold in the U.S. market. Honda's Type R models will bear the iconic red "H" badge on the front grille of the car. There is a new intake on the hood, with an air scoop. Smoked lenses for the LED headlights, turn indicators, and side indicator lights reflect the Type R Prototype's bolder, sporty character, Honda says.

Side sills are trimmed in carbon fiber side skirts with red character lines, and the Type R Prototype rides on 20-in. piano black alloy wheels with red accents and high-performance tires. A burly carbon fiber diffuser runs below the rear fascia, which frames three fully functional exhaust tailpipes. The smaller diameter central tailpipe is highlighted in bright metallic red. Splitters and brawny Brembo brakes are part of the new Civic Type R package. Model-exclusive vortex generators at the rear edges of the roof point backward toward the striking rear wing. Specifications and pricing will be revealed later.
