Olivia Rodrigo Sings Powerful Cover of Noah Kahan's Hit Folk Song 'Stick Season'

The pop star appeared on the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge on Monday

Olivia Rodrigo may be influenced by ‘00s pop-rock and ‘90s alternative, but it turns out that she can go folk, too!

The pop star, 20, appeared on the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge on Monday, and in addition to performing her songs “Driver’s License,” “Get Him Back!,” and “Vampire,” she also covered “Stick Season” by rising artist Noah Kahan, 26.

The “All-American Bitch” singer and her all-women band slowed down the popular track off the Vermont singer-songwriter’s 2022 album of the same name. While Rodrigo didn’t take on his signature twang, her cover retained the original’s Americana tone, as she was joined by two acoustic guitars and an electric mandolin.

On the emotionally potent chorus especially, the Grammy winner highlighted her folksy range by powerfully emphasizing certain words and phrases.

Kahan himself was thrilled with the cover. In response, the “Dial Drunk” singer shared a TikTok featuring a split screen of Rodrigo’s performance and a video of himself listening to it. Over the footage of himself rocking out, he wrote, “Olivia covering stick season? Her song now.”

“id give her my entire discography,” the folk star also joked in the caption. “olivia thank you so much.”

Rodrigo is no stranger to performing captivating covers. Just last week the superstar joined Sheryl Crow for a sweet duet of the folk-pop icon’s “If It Makes You Happy” on stage at The Bluebird Café in Nashville.

In 2022, she also honored Carly Simon when the pop-rock legend was being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by performing her classic “You’re So Vain.”

On tour and during festival appearances, the 20-year-old rock star has also impressed with her takes on songs from Avril Lavigne to No Doubt. Lily Allen even joined her at Glastonbury music festival 2022 to play her hit “F--- You," and Alanis Morrisette came out to sing with her on a stop of the Sour tour in May 2022.

The “Bad Idea Right?” singer released her sophomore album GUTS in September and opened up to PEOPLE about some of the inspiration behind it.

“I think there are so many expectations placed on women — you’re always supposed to be grateful and calm and gracious and poised,” she shared. “Growing up, I really struggled with the conflict of having all these feelings that I felt like I couldn’t externalize and this expectation that I wanted to be this good girl.”

She added, “I think that I truly can’t write a song and pander. Good songs don’t come out of me writing to please other people. All my best songs come from me just wanting to express something for myself and wanting to process a feeling just for me.”
