Wholesale inflation remained cool last month in latest sign that price pressures are slowing
Wholesale prices in the United States were unchanged last month in another sign that inflation is returning to something close to normal after years of pressuring America's households in the wake of COVID-19. The Labor Department reported Friday that its producer price index — which tracks inflation before it hits consumers — didn't move from August to September after rising 0.2% the month before. It rose 1.8% last month from a year earlier, down a tick from a 1.9% year-over-year increase in August.

U.S. producer prices were unchanged in September, pointing to a still-favorable inflation outlook and supporting views that the Federal Reserve would cut interest rates again next month. The unchanged reading in the producer price index for final demand last month followed an unrevised 0.2% gain in August, the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics said on Friday. Government data on Thursday showed consumer prices rising slightly more than expected in September, lifted by higher food costs.
