New design trails, furniture and craft fairs at Singapore Design Week 2017

The Singapore Design Week returns from 3 to 12 March with new design trails, furniture and craft fairs as well as insightful talks catered to all sorts of design enthusiasts in the country.

This year’s feature event is a consolidation of three exhibitions – Singapore Pavillion, “Space to Imagine, Room for Everyone” and “Limit/Limitless” – that were presented at the 15th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice, Italy last year. The free exhibition, called “Frontliners in Action: Architects and the people create a better living environment” runs from 3 March to 8 April at the National Design Centre.

Explore note-worthy architectures, furniture retailers and craft centers in Singapore by joining a design trail called Design Day Out. This year’s stops include innovative offices Collision 8 and the Airbnb office, as well as furniture retailer Journey East and fashion craft material specialist Sing Mui Heng. Join the trail by hopping on a free shuttle bus during the closing weekend from 11 to 12 March. Click here for the bus schedule.

Make your own miniature Kopi-O cup ring or design a ceramic pot at the Design Make and Craft Fair, happening from 4 to 5 March at the National Library Building. The event features 40 craftsmen, makers and designers from Singapore and the region who will be encouraging visitors to pick up a basic creative skill. Interesting works by the same independent creatives will also be exhibited at the event.

Purchase a furniture or two at the International Furniture Fair, which will be held from 9 to 12 March at the Singapore EXPO. Also known as Nook Asia, this year’s fair will also feature “decorative home accessories, interiors and fittings by a diverse portfolio of quality exhibitors”.

Held in conjunction with the International Furniture Fair, SingaPlural is organised by the Singapore Furniture Industries Council (SFIC) to showcase local design projects by displaying their works at the F1 Pit building and holding design-related talks and workshops.

International and local design speakers will also be gathering in Singapore for the “Innovation by Design” Conference held from 7 to 8 March at the Fort Canning Hotel. Organised by the DesignSingapore Council, this year’s conference partners with international media Fortune, TIME and Wallpaper.

9 Lives Design Show

Cat lovers will surely love the 9 Lives Design Show, which showcases furniture designs for cats living in urban and compact spaces like our HDB homes. These works are put together by nine designers. Happening at the Visual Arts Centre at Dhoby Ghaut Green from 3 to 6 March.

Showers Forecasted

Local designer Andrew Loh will be showcasing a new line of whimsical bath objects along with a design installation. Called Showers Forecasted, this is the first time the designer will be showcasing his collection. The event is happening at PickJunction at Eunos Avenue 7 from 3 to 12 March.

Handcrafted, in sync with nature

Explore modern furniture that use age old handcrafted techniques at this showcase by designer Nathan Yong. He has developed a range using marble, brass and metal for a new brand called Ipse Ipsa Ipsum. The event is happening at Sam & Sara Home at the National Design Centre from 3 to 12 March.

Artisan – Beyond Craft

Explore Japanese arts at this exhibition, which showcases crafts and photographs curated by KOGEI STANDARD, a Japanese Craft Magazine website by creative agency HULS. Also happening at the Visual Arts Centre at Dhoby Ghaut Green from 8 to 14 March.

Design Night Singapore: Virtual World

If you’re a fan of virtual and augmented reality, the Design Night Singapore: Virtual World is a party not to be missed. Organised by US software company Autodesk, the event lets you experience virtual and augmented realities themed after architecture, archaeology, education, medicine, visual arts and more. The event will take place on 9 March at the MAD Museum of Singapore.

Raise the Roof II

Dance to smooth grooves and sip on cocktails while being surrounded by eclectic designs at WOOBAR at W Singapore – Sentosa Cove. Look out for some of the hottest local DJs on the deck, such as MR. HAS and ONE WITH ALDRIN. The event’s happening on 10 March at the rooftop of the National Design Centre.

Art Day Out! X Singapore Design Week

Look out for a special exhibition in collaboration with the popular Wallpaper* magazine, featuring one-off luxury creations and pieces created by talented artists, designers and craftsmen. There are also special design workshops you can take part in. The event’s happening on 11 March at Gillman Barracks.
