Yahoo Finance Netflix, Amazon, Hulu flex muscles for Golden Globes, underscore Hollywood's streaming shift
It’s been a strange year for Hollywood with the box office largely shut down due to COVID-19, and with most Americans still watching content from the comfort of their own homes.
Yet streamers have cashed in on the pandemic boom — and the award shows are now taking notice. The 78th Golden Globe nominations were officially announced on Wednesday, and Netflix (NFLX) reigned supreme with a whopping 42 total nods across both the TV and film categories.
Amazon Studios (AMZN) and Hulu (DIS) followed Netflix’s lead with 10 and 9 nods, respectively, as streaming giants controlled virtually every category.
The new wave underscores the power shift that’s happening in Hollywood when it comes to at-home vs. traditional releases — with the pandemic accelerating the changing times for the industry.
Top series included Netflix’s “The Crown” and “Mank,” which both secured 6 nominations each.
Meanwhile, “Schitt’s Creek” — which swept at the Emmys last year — is predicted as the front-runner in the TV comedy category, although Apple TV Plus (AAPL) could see a big win with Jason Sudeikis’ “Ted Lasso.”
A win by “Lasso” would provide a much-needed boost of confidence for the streamer, which has struggled to keep up with competitors like Disney Plus and HBO Max (T).
To note, with the exception of “Schitt’s Creek,” all nominees in the best comedy show category are in their first season.
Disney Plus scored a best TV drama nomination for its flagship series “The Mandalorian” while its ever-popular “Hamilton: The Musical” secured a nod in the best movie, musical or comedy category.
“Hamilton” will be going up against Amazon’s new “Borat” sequel. The platform’s other top film “One Night in Miami,” continues to generate buzz after securing a supporting actor nod for Leslie Odom Jr., and a best director nod for Regina King — although the film was snubbed for best drama.
Other Golden Globe snubs included Tom Hanks (“News of the World”), Zendaya (“Malcom and Marie”) and Meryl Streep (“The Prom”) along with Spike Lee’s “Da 5 Bloods,” Netflix’s breakout hit “Bridgerton” and the streamer’s dark comedy series “Dead to Me.”
Meanwhile, surprise Golden Globe nominations included Netflix’s “Emily in Paris” along with the film “Promising Young Woman.”
Kate Hudson, who stars alongside Maddie Ziegler in Sia’s yet-to-be released movie “Music,” also came as a shock to critics after the Fabletics founder received a best actress nod for her role in the upcoming film.
Additionally, three women were also nominated for best director this year— a new record for the award show.
The Golden Globes is set to air on NBC February 28.
