Nasdaq Reaches New High

U.S. market indexes were mixed on Tuesday.

For the day the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 21,574.73 for a loss of 54.99 points or 0.25%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,460.61 for a gain of 1.47 points or 0.06%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,344.31 for a gain of 29.87 points or 0.47%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher for the day at 9.95 for a gain of 0.13 points or 1.32%.


Tuesday's market movers

Technology stocks reported gains on Tuesday with a new high for the Nasdaq. Other large-cap stock valuations were mixed. Losses from Goldman Sachs (GS) kept the Dow Jones Industrial Average negative for the day. Other big banks were also lower despite positive second-quarter results as uncertainty continues in interest rate levels and trading volumes continue to report losses for large banks.

Economic reports affecting market trading on Tuesday included the following:

  • Import prices reported an annual increase of 1.5% and export prices reported an increase of 0.6%.

  • The Housing Market Index decreased to 64 from 66 and was below consensus of 68.

  • Procter & Gamble (PG) 1.25%.

  • Disney (DIS) 0.93%.

  • Visa (NYSE:V) 0.77%.

  • IBM (IBM) 0.69%.



Small-cap stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,427.61 for a loss of 3.99 points or 0.28%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 861.97 for a loss of 3.15 points or 0.36%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8,647.79 for a loss of 20.23 points or 0.23%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,626.26 for a loss of 30.45 points or 0.32%.

Other notable indexes

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,763.04 for a loss of 5.11 points or 0.29%; the S&P 100 Index at 1,083.95 for a gain of 1.50 points or 0.14%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,457.24 for a gain of 0.27 points or 0.02%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1,363.23 for a gain of 0.59 points or 0.04%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 659.18 for a loss of 1.29 points or 0.20%.
