Violent offenses tracked included rape, murder and non-negligent manslaughter, armed robbery, and aggravated assault, including assault with a deadly weapon.

The following list is based on the total number of violent crimes per resident, a way to compare crime rates between communities with varying populations. The numbers for all cities in the FBI report – several thousand – were calculated and reviewed.

In fact, it was one of few on the list that has seen a decrease in all crimes that are considered violent. Most of the time the biggest cities are not the worst places to live in terms of safety – the number of crime is higher but the numbers of residents is much, much higher.
