Mini Previews New John Cooper Works Countryman Peppy Small SUV

Mini, BMW’s sporty British car brand, provided a glimpse of its second-generation John Cooper Works Countryman small SUV that bears elements from the brand’s sports car racing heritage. The new JCW Countryman, which is built in Austria, offers all-wheel-drive (AWD) versatility to take on dirt roads and all kinds of weather conditions, Mini says. The newest John Cooper Works Countryman will premiere in April at the 2017 Shanghai Auto Show (Auto Shanghai 2017), when it also will begin arriving at U.S. dealerships.

Some 55 years ago, Mini took its first victory lap in a classic Mini in the British Touring Car Championship. Today, Mini is heralding its newest, largest, and most powerful 5-seat Countryman that offers plenty of power with its most energetic, turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that produces 228 horsepower (20 more than the current model) and 258 ft.-lb. of torque. The 2018 John Cooper Works Countryman comes with standard AWD that Mini calls its ALL4 system.

Mini’s latest John Cooper Works Countryman sprints from 0-60 mph in 6.2 seconds when matched with either the standard 6-speed manual or optional 8-speed Steptronic Sport automatic transmission, which offers more zip than an S variant. Cornering, agility, and deceleration performance are part of the John Cooper Works package, along with a sport suspension that can lean in to a maximum speed of 145 mph on a straightaway, according to Mini.

The new Countryman model rides on John Cooper Works 18-in. light alloy wheels and is equipped with a performance-optimized Brembo sport brake system and special air intakes. A John Cooper Works sporty cabin with dynamic seats adds an aerodynamic feel along with standard driving features such as Mini driving modes, LED headlights, keyless entry, and a 6.5-in. digital screen with Mini’s Connected infotainment system.

More spacious than the outgoing Countryman, the John Cooper Works Countryman is 6.7 inches longer and 1.3 inches wider, plus the wheelbase has been extended by 2.9 inches. In addition, the luggage compartment has been increased to expand from 17.6 cu. ft. to a possible 47.6 cu. ft.
