It's been quite a year since rumors first surfaced that the Western drama Yellowstone could be getting a spin-off. The Taylor Sheridan-helmed hit has become known as much for its behind-the-scenes drama as it has to the plot twists and turns on screen, and now there's another name in the mix that's sure to get some fans plenty excited. Michelle Pfeiffer is said to be in negotiations to join the previously announced Yellowstone spin-off series as a lead, with Puck reporting that her potential involvement should be confirmed or scrapped within the next few weeks.

So far, no other information about the show, including what character Pfeiffer might be poised to play, has been released, but that hasn't stopped the rumor mill from churning. Back in February 2023, whispers first indicated that Matthew McConaughey was being considered for a part in the Yellowstone universe. At the time, speculation was rife that Kevin Costner, who stars as patriarch John Dutton on the original series, would be exiting the show and that McConaughey was up to replace him as the lead. That March, Paramount Media Networks head Chris McCarthy confirmed that McConaughey would be joining the Yellowstone universe, though he didn't rule out Costner's continuing involvement. Costner did, ultimately announce his exit from the show a few months later, almost immediately followed by the news that Yellowstone itself would be ending.

In November 2023, Paramount revealed the premiere date for the final episodes of Yellowstone and also confirmed the spin-off under the working title 2024. The show is now set to air at the end of the year, after Yellowstone wraps up its run, however McConaughey has still not officially signed on, with Puck reporting that the star refuses to go under contract for the series until he has seen a script. The publication also states that multiple cast members from the original series, including Cole Hauser (whose coffee company is currently involved in a legal dispute with Sheridan's ranch), Kelly Reilly, and Luke Grimes, are also in negotiations for the spin-off.

Beyond that, virtually nothing is known about the show itself, but with Sheridan's history of pulling in talent like Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford for his Yellowstone prequels, the work of Pfeiffer's possible casting is certainly something fans will be keeping an eye on.
