The first trailer for How I Met Your Father is here, and it reveals a big move away from its predecessor How I Met Your Mother.

And we're not just talking about the whole new cast thing.

Ahead of its release in January, the spin-off series has given us our first look at Hilary Duff's Sophie and her group of friends as she reminisces about navigating the online dating world and, of course, how she met her future son's father.

The teaser also reveals our first look at Kim Cattrall's character Future Sophie as she narrates the story, where her HIMYM counterpart, Bob Saget, never appeared on-screen.

How I Met Your Father has been described as "a story that catapults us back to the year 2021, where Sophie and her close-knit group of friends are in the midst of figuring out who they are, what they want out of life, and how to fall in love in the age of dating apps and limitless options".

Hilary Duff serves as producer on the 10-episode series, alongside HIMYM creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas. This Is Us co-showrunners Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger are also on board as writers and executive producers.

"Carter and Craig's iconic original series revolutionised the half-hour comedy, and we are so honoured to be carrying the torch forward for the next generation – and with Hilary Duff no less!" Isaac and Elizabeth said in an earlier statement.

"We can't wait for audiences to meet Sophie and her crew, and watch them come into their own and find love in modern-day New York City.

"And we hope nobody thinks it's weird that Bob Saget will be playing old Hilary Duff's voice."

How I Met Your Father will air on Hulu in the US, while its UK broadcaster is to be confirmed.
