Should Meritor (NYSE:MTOR) Be Disappointed With Their 68% Profit?

Meritor, Inc. (NYSE:MTOR) shareholders might be concerned after seeing the share price drop 24% in the last month. But don't let that distract from the very nice return generated over three years. In the last three years the share price is up, 68%: better than the market.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

During three years of share price growth, Meritor achieved compound earnings per share growth of 55% per year. This EPS growth is higher than the 19% average annual increase in the share price. So one could reasonably conclude that the market has cooled on the stock. We'd venture the lowish P/E ratio of 5.41 also reflects the negative sentiment around the stock.

A Different Perspective

Meritor shareholders are down 17% for the year, but the market itself is up 1.7%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 5.3%, each year, over five years. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. If you would like to research Meritor in more detail then you might want to take a look at whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in the company.
