Pope Francis heads to Belgium to meet migrants, abuse victims
Pope Francis is pressing ahead with a four-day visit to Luxembourg and Belgium despite coming down with a mild flu, in a trip expected to highlight the needs of migrants and to feature a meeting with survivors of abuse by Catholic clergy. The Vatican said the 87-year-old pope planned to make the trip, which starts on Thursday, after cancelling some meetings on Monday because of flu-like symptoms. The Sept. 26-29 tour is a rare European visit for Francis, who prefers going to places never visited by a pope, or where Catholics are a small minority.

Singapore commissioned two new advanced submarines on Tuesday, vessels its navy says are meant to protect sea lines of communication, and which experts said would range beyond the waters of the tiny city-state to keep tabs on the region. The country's fifth and sixth submarines, the Invincible and the Impeccable, were ordered from Germany's ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems in 2013 in a 1-billion-euro deal, and join older Archer- and Challenger-class boats. They represent a technological step forward for Singapore's fleet, experts say, allowing the wealthy Southeast Asian nation to operate farther from shore using fewer sailors, and making its craft among the quietest in the region.

UBS ahead of schedule on cost savings, CEO says
Swiss bank UBS is running around six months ahead of schedule in its cost savings efforts and its integration of Credit Suisse, CEO Sergio Ermotti said on Tuesday. UBS is making market share gains and its investment bank is developing as expected, Ermotti said at a Bank of America conference. "When I look at cost progress, when I look at non-core legacy assets wind down and simplifications, we are, I would say, around six months out of schedule," Ermotti said.
