McDonald's is expanding its McPick discounts to more items

Justin Sullivan | Getty Images. McDonald's revealed on Wednesday that it is expanding its McPick 2 menu to allow local restaurants to add regional favorites to the value menu.

McDonald's (NYSE: MCD) is making yet another tweak to its menu. This time, the chain is altering its McPick 2 promotion.

Starting May 24 customers nationwide will all see the Big Mac, the Filet-O-Fish sandwich and the 10-piece Chicken Nuggets as fixtures on the McPick 2 for $5 menu. However, regionally, the other slots will vary.

Local restaurant operators have been given the green light to add up to three items to the six-item value menu, based on what is most popular in their area.

The news was first reported by industry blog Burger Business on Wednesday.

The restaurant behemoth is no stranger to altering its menu based on regional palates.

The chain's "Gilroy Garlic Fries," a limited-time menu item in the San Francisco Bay Area, sold out in earlier May. In 14 stores in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, the company is slated to cook its Quarter Pounder burgers with fresh beef.

Some 125 stores in Milwaukee are planning to sell Johnsonville Brats for a limited time, seven years after discontinuing the sausages in chains.

The burger giant is also testing out smaller and larger Big Macs in Texas and Ohio restaurants. The Grand Mac is an attempt to compete with chains like Smashburger and Five Guys that serve larger burgers, while the Mac Jr. gives Wendy's Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger a run for its money.

In addition, McDonald's will host a limited-time, all-you-can eat french fry promotion during the grand opening of its new location in Missouri this July.
