Mattel Just Poached A Top Google Executive To Lead The Toy Company

Margo Georgiadis joined Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ: GOOG) (NASDAQ: GOOGL) in 2009 when it was known as Google and one of the highest ranking advertising executives.

Georgiadis' History

In 2011 she left Google to join Groupon Inc (NASDAQ: GRPN) for a brief stint as chief operating officer. However, after just five months she returned to Google to serve as president of the Americas region.

Georgiadis will be leaving Google for the second time as she was appointed CEO of the toy company Mattel, Inc. (NASDAQ: MAT). She will replace Christopher Sinclair who himself was tasked with overseeing a turnaround at the toy company in early 2015. However, a search for a more permanent CEO has been underway since November 2016 when the company tasked the recruitment agency Spencer Stuart.

Google's Chief Business Officer Philipp Schindler told Recode in a statement that Georgiadis helped create "terrific momentum for our business and under her leadership, we've built incredibly close relationships with our partners across the Americas."

The Way Ahead

"We are delighted that Margo has agreed to lead the team as CEO," Michael Dolan, Mattel's independent lead director said in Mattel's press release. "Her leadership experience at Google and elsewhere, coupled with her proven ability to foster innovation and build partnerships on a global scale, makes her ideally suited to accelerate Mattel's growth in the coming years."
