How Many Forestar Group Inc. (NYSE:FOR) Shares Did Insiders Buy, In The Last Year?

We often see insiders buying up shares in companies that perform well over the long term. On the other hand, we'd be remiss not to mention that insider sales have been known to precede tough periods for a business. So we'll take a look at whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in Forestar Group Inc. (NYSE:FOR).

What Is Insider Buying?

Most investors know that it is quite permissible for company leaders, such as directors of the board, to buy and sell stock in the company. However, most countries require that the company discloses such transactions to the market.

Insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing. But it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing. For example, a Columbia University study found that 'insiders are more likely to engage in open market purchases of their own company’s stock when the firm is about to reveal new agreements with customers and suppliers'.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Forestar Group

insider M. Hudson made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$329k worth of shares at a price of US$13.15 each. Although we like to see insider buying, we note that this large purchase was at significantly below the recent price of US$19.61. Because it occurred at a lower valuation, it doesn't tell us much about whether insiders might find today's price attractive.

In the last twelve months insiders purchased 27500 shares for US$366k. But insiders sold 2000 shares worth US$42k. In total, Forestar Group insiders bought more than they sold over the last year. Forestar Group is not the only stock that insiders are buying. For those who like to find winning investments this free list of growing companies with recent insider purchasing, could be just the ticket.

Insiders at Forestar Group Have Sold Stock Recently

We have seen a bit of insider selling at Forestar Group, over the last three months. Independent Director G. Ringler divested only US$42k worth of shares in that time. Neither the lack of buying nor the presence of selling is heartening. But the volume sold is so low that it really doesn't bother us.

Insider Ownership

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. From looking at our data, insiders own US$2.8m worth of Forestar Group stock, about 0.3% of the company. I generally like to see higher levels of ownership.

So What Does This Data Suggest About Forestar Group Insiders?

We did not see any insider buying in the last three months, but we did see selling. However, the sales are not big enough to concern us at all. On a brighter note, the transactions over the last year are encouraging. We'd like to see bigger individual holdings. However, we don't see anything to make us think Forestar Group insiders are doubting the company. Of course, the future is what matters most.
