Man arrested for illegally collecting face masks from Temasek Foundation vending machines

SINGAPORE — A 38-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly using illegally obtained personal information to collect face masks from Temasek Foundation vending machines.

The suspect is believed to have used the information to attempt 61 unauthorised redemptions of face masks and managed to successfully collect 11 face masks from vending machines located at Bukit Panjang Plaza and along Bishans Street 22, said the police in a news release on Sunday (14 March).

Police said they received a report on Saturday from a victim who was unable to collect his mask from a vending machine at Pasir Ris East Community Centre. On the same day, Temasek Foundation also lodged a report stating that they had received multiple complaints from people who were unable to collect their masks from vending machines at Bukit Panjang and Bishan.

With the help of images from police cameras and CCTV cameras connected to the vending machines, the police identified the suspect and arrested him on Sunday.

If convicted of cheating, the suspect faces a jail term of up to 10 years and a fine. For retaining illegally obtained personal information, he faces a possible jail term of up to three years, a fine of up to $10,000 or both.

Police added that similar reports have been received in other residential estates and that they are stepping up their efforts to apprehend perpetrators.
