Malcolm Gladwell on presidential election: 'I'm heading home'

If Canadian best-selling author Malcolm Gladwell were to write a book about this year's U.S. presidential election, he said his title would be "I'm heading home."

Gladwell told CNBC at the Charles Schwab IMPACT 2016 conference during CNBC's "Power Lunch" the United States has had a pretty good group of people leading the country during the last few crucial moments in history, but said this election has been a "harsh one."

Gladwell is the author of several books, including Blink, Outliers and bestseller The Tipping Point. He is also a staff writer for The New Yorker.

"It's bad when you are not from here," Gladwell said.

"I get a daily dose of what Canadians think about what's going on, and that's a very different — I mean they're a little bit appalled," he added. "The Canadian debates don't resemble the American debates."

Gladwell suggested it's easy to get very focused on "the decision right in front of us" and the "mistakes we made in the last five minutes." He added, however, that he thinks "the crowd rises to the occasion when there's something of significance."
