Use it or lose it on WestJet's Gander-Toronto expansion

Use it or lose it on WestJet's Gander-Toronto expansion

WestJet is expanding its direct flight service from Gander to Toronto, extending what was a summer seasonal service to a year-round one, although that's not a guarantee the flights are there to stay.

"We're extremely pleased with how well the service is being used," WestJet spokesperson Lauren Stewart told CBC Radio's Central Morning Show.

WestJet had already expanded on that route this year, upping its direct flights from two to four times weekly through the summer.

The new winter service will continue to see four flights weekly between the two destinations, a service the airline anticipates will be as popular as its summer one.

"We are hoping — it has had great pickup," said Stewart.

'Wait and see'

The expansion is not a permanent move for WestJet at the moment. Stewart said the company will be checking to see if enough passengers make the route worth it over the next few months.

"We want the service to be used," she said.

"We kind of wait and see. Sometimes it does take a while to see if things are good, or sometimes they drop and they may pick up, so it's not always an immediate decision."

WestJet did drop a direct route between Gander and Halifax in May, citing low flyer numbers, and Stewart said the airline is not considering adding that route, or any others, to Gander at the moment.
