New 'Loki' trailer teases time-traveling adventures starring Marvel's favorite trickster

Agatha Harkness was WandaVision's resident scene-stealer, but when it comes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe's favorite trickster, it's been Loki all along. Tom Hiddleston's Jotunheim-born, Asgardian-raised alter ego takes center stage in a new trailer for his new Disney+ series, which premieres on the streaming service on June 11, a month before Marvel's long-delayed big-screen feature Black Widow finally makes its debut. (Watch the Loki trailer above.)

First things first: this both is — and isn't — the Loki you remember. Thor's sibling was one of the first casualties of Thanos's Infinity War, dying at the purple despot's mighty hand in the opening moments of that 2018 blockbuster. When the surviving Avengers used time travel to undo the universe-altering Snap in 2019's Endgame, an earlier version of Loki absconded into the timestream with the Tesseract. And unlike his more mature "older" self, this Avengers-era Loki is still eager to cause trouble for Earth's mightiest heroes.

Good thing that there are temporal authority figures standing in his way. Nabbing the dimension-hopping Space Stone brings Loki to the immediate attention of the Time-Keepers, whose organization, the Time Variance Authority, is tasked with maintaining the integrity of the MCU's timeline. "We protect the proper flow of time," explains TVA officer Mobius M. Mobius, played by Owen Wilson — sporting a new look that broke the Internet when it was first revealed. "You picked up the Tesseract, breaking reality. I want you to help us fix it."

"Fixing" reality requires visits to multiple points in time and space, and fans on Twitter had a field day guessing all the different realms Loki might visit.

Of course, taking this mischief-maker to multiple points on the MCU timeline also affords Loki multiple opportunities to meddle with the TVA's efforts, instead of aiding them. And at least one of Mobius's colleagues, Judge Renslayer (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), questions the wisdom of placing too much trust in this wily variant. By the way, Renslayer's comic book counterpart has her own complicated history with divergents like Loki: she had a hate-love-hate relationship with master time manipulator Kang the Conquerer that spanned multiple timelines. And with Lovecraft Country star Jonathan Majors set to play Kang opposite Paul Rudd's Ant-Man and Evangeline Lily's Wasp in the upcoming Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, it seems likely that the events of Loki will even be felt in the Quantum Realm.

Another piece of the larger MCU puzzle is revealed when TVA officers are seen preparing to enter a giant Roxxcart, which many are assuming to be a department store subsidiary of the Roxxon Corporation. (Not for nothing, but Roxxcart has an official web presence — watch that space for more in-universe fun.) This multinational conglomerate is as old as the MCU itself, making its debut in the original Iron Man back in 2008 when Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) had an iron-on-iron battle with Obadiah Stane (Jeff Bridges). Roxxon has also appeared in supposedly outside-of-canon productions like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Daredevil, Cloak & Dagger and even the new Miles Morales Spider-Man video game for the PS5, lending further credence to the idea that this Loki variant might be the connecting bridge that unites all the divergent MCU series.

Loki may be a puny god — but it's already clear that his impact on the future of the MCU is going to be seismic.

Loki premieres June 11 on Disney+.
