'Let's Get Loud'? Jennifer Lopez earns mixed reactions with patriotic mashup at Biden inauguration

Jennifer Lopez made a big impression with her performance at Wednesday's inauguration of President Joe Biden.

Shortly after Lady Gaga's captivating rendition of the national anthem, the singer took the podium outside the U.S. Capitol to sing a moving version of Woody Guthrie's "This Land is Your Land." A minute and a half into the song, she switched to "America the Beautiful" before speaking a line of the Pledge of Allegiance in Spanish and belting out a part of her own hit "Let's Get Loud" from her 1999 debut album "On the 6."

The "Hustlers" star wore an all-white Chanel outfit, including a ruffled blouse, pants and long tweed coat.

Lopez, whose parents are from Puerto Rico, earned praise from some Twitter users who found her decision to incorporate Spanish into the performance emotional.

Others were less receptive to her patriotic mashup, making jokes about how she worked her own song into the inaugural performance and wondering if it was planned.

The inauguration caps off a banner past year of performances for Lopez, 51, who headlined the Super Bowl halftime show with Shakira last February, as well as "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve With Ryan Seacrest" last month.

Ahead of Wednesday's ceremony, the singer's fiance, Alex Rodriguez, told Jimmy Fallon she was anxious about her performance.

"What's interesting is she's most nervous about Washington, D.C., because of the responsibility," Rodriguez said on Monday's episode of "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon." "She wants more than anything, like all of us, to bring people together, to inspire. Music and sports does that better than anything."

In October, Lopez and Rodriguez joined Biden and his wife, Jill Biden, for a virtual conversation about the importance of voting in the general election.

"For me, it’s unifying the nation again, you know, getting rid of this hate," Lopez said. "Thinking about my kids walking around in a world where it’s OK to be racist or prejudiced because our administration says it’s OK – that, to me, is really sad because it’s not the country that I believe that I grew up in."
