Latest on 5-star Joyce Edwards’ recruiting plans as basketball signing period arrives

The fall signing period begins Wednesday, and it doesn’t appear Joyce Edwards is close to making her college choice.

The Camden High five-star prospect and No. 2-ranked girls basketball for the Class of 2024 isn’t sure when she will be making her choice known. Senior athletes have until Nov. 15 to sign in the early period, or they can wait until the next signing period begins in April.

“I still don’t know. I am getting some ideas. I might sign early, announce later. It just depends on what I am feeling,” Edwards told The State after basketball practice on Tuesday. “I may sign late. We are trying to figure that out.”

This was the first week Edwards has returned to practice full-time. Her volleyball season ended Saturday after the Bulldogs lost to Wren in the Class 3A state championship. During the title match, a group of South Carolina Gamecocks fans chanted, “We want Joyce! We want Joyce!” between sets.

Edwards took pictures with Gamecock fans after the match. The Cotton Gin bar/restaurant, located in Five Points, had “We want Joyce Edwards” on its marquee last month when she went on her official visit.

Dawn Staley and South Carolina are one of the schools in pursuit of Edwards, last year’s S.C. Gatorade Player of the Year.

The Gamecocks were Edwards’ last official visit she took on Oct. 27-29.. She attended USC’s practice, ate some good food, she said, and hung out with some of USC’s players, many of whom she is familiar with.

Edwards and USC’s Chloe Kitts played together on Team USA’s gold-medal winning team at the FIBA U19 Women’s World Cup. Edwards was the youngest player on the roster and led the team in scoring at 12.6 points per game.

“Really fun, I obviously knew a lot of the players and played against them. Lot of us came from the same AAU organization. It was just a really fun visit overall,” Edwards said.

Edwards said she liked the way Staley interacts with her players during practice.

“She gets on everybody and anybody if you aren’t doing what you are supposed to do. She is going to get on you. She also is going to be there for you in every situation,” Edwards said. “I love that about her.”

Edwards also watched USC’s season-opening 100-71 victory against Notre Dame on Monday in Paris. Former Keenan High standout MiLaysia Fulwiley stole the show in her freshman debut, scoring 17 points that included a viral, behind-the-back, up-and-under layup that had NBA star Kevin Durant and Hall of Famer Magic Johnson talking about it.

Edwards and Fulwiley played against each other several times during their high school careers.

“I am happy they got the W,” Edwards said. “MiLaysia, she is great, I played against her and in the state championship game. I knew what she could do was great.”

South Carolina is one of seven schools Edwards has taken official visits to over the last few months. The others were Clemson, Florida, LSU, Maryland, Stanford and Texas A&M.

LSU and Clemson sent coaches to Camden last month for one of Edwards’’ playoff volleyball matches. LSU head coach Kim Mulkey brought three of her assistants with her as the defending national champions look to sign Edwards.

LSU star Angel Reese posted on her X page (formerly known as Twitter) about the possibility of playing with Edwards and other potential high-profile targets for her senior season next year.

“Playing with @thesarahstrong @JoyceEdwards24 and @JaloniCambridge my last year would be crazy right?” Reese posted on Oct. 29.

Edwards and her Camden team have their first scrimmage against Ridge View on Thursday. The defending Class 3A champion Bulldogs open the season Nov. 24-25 in the She Got Next Event at White Knoll High School.

Camden’s schedule includes trips to Myrtle Beach for the Beach Ball Classic, playing a showcase game in the hometown Chick-fil-A Classic and trip to New York for two games, one against nationally ranked Long Island Lutheran.

“This year is going to be real bittersweet,” Edwards said. “I am going to miss them, miss my team. I have been playing with them since elementary school. But we all know the end goal and that is a state championship. I am looking forward to getting one of those.”
