Large-Cap Stocks Mostly Lower With Health Care Vote Uncertainty

Large-cap stocks were lower Friday. For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 20596.72 for a loss of -59.86 points or -0.29%. The S&P 500 closed at 2343.98 for a loss of -1.98 points or -0.08%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5828.74 for a gain of 11.04 points or 0.19%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower for the day at 12.92 for a loss of -0.20 points or -1.52%.


For the week, the Dow Jones reported a loss of -1.49%. The S&P 500 decreased by -1.41% and the Nasdaq Composite was down -1.19%.

Friday's market movers

Another delayed health care vote weighed on stocks as the Trump administration reported a lack of support for the reform. Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • Durable goods orders were above consensus, reporting a 1.7% monthly gain.

  • The PMI Composite report was below consensus of 54.3 at 53.2.

  • The Baker Hughes North American rig count decreased to 994.



In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led losses:

DuPont (DD) -1.19%

Pfizer (PFE) -0.85%

Boeing (BA) -0.81%

ExxonMobil (XOM) -0.77%

In the broad market, materials stocks led losses. Technology was higher with the S&P 500 technology sector gaining 0.08%.

Small-cap stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1354.64 for a gain of 1.22 points or 0.09%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 825.58 for a loss of -0.20 points or -0.02%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8119.26 for a gain of 19.80 points or 0.24%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9439.33 for a loss of -16.42 points or -0.17%.

Other notable indexes

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1694.41 for a loss of -2.01 points or -0.12%. The S&P 100 Index at 1039.08 for a loss of -1.39 points or -0.13%. The Russell 3000 Index at 1387.96 for a loss of -0.84 points or -0.06%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1298.81 for a loss of -0.95 points or -0.07%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 648.81 for a loss of -0.96 points or -0.15%.
