Yahoo Finance Lamborghini Urus Loses Tires, Keeps Driving on Rims in 120-MPH Police Chase
The Lamborghini Urus is an impressive second take on an SUV for the supercar manufacturer, but let's face it, it's not exactly subtle. That makes it a poor choice of getaway car when trying to evade police, as one Urus driver in Canada learned shortly before their arrest last week, according to police and to CTVNews.
Video released by Canada's York Regional Police shows the pursuit starting on a highway before cutting to the Urus driving past a police truck on a cul-de-sac. According to police, the Lamborghini hit speeds of more than 124 miles per hour in the course of the chase. The Urus then hits what the department calls a "tire deflation device," leading to damage before the driver returns to the highway. That leads to a big tire blowout, but the driver continues at a reported 85 mph for some distance after the hit, sending up showers of what appear to be sparks and debris as seen on the police helicopter's infrared camera.
In a portion of the chase not covered in the video, police say in a report released Friday that the driver was briefly boxed in at an apartment complex before "purposely [driving] into marked cruisers" and escaping again, still with a flat tire. Helicopter footage then shows the driver and another car pulling into a parking lot, where the driver and a passenger are seen exiting the car to meet the driver of the other car. Police then swarm in, arresting the drivers of both cars.
The driver of the Urus was charged with dangerous operation, flight from a peace officer, and failure to stop after an accident. A second driver was also charged with assaulting a peace officer with a weapon. That charge stems from the driver running over the foot of an officer while trying to escape before the arrest, an incident claimed in the police report that would have occurred between cuts in the video of the pursuit. Photos shared by police from the scene show major damage to the Urus, which was left running on two bare right-side wheels after the punctures.
