Kristen Bell Shared Dax Shepard’s Flustered Response to Their Daughter’s Sex Question

Kristen Bell Shared Dax Shepard’s Flustered Response to Their Daughter’s Sex Question

These two always keep it real.

Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard’s daughters, or the “two crazy parakeets stapled to her shoulders” as Bell lovingly referred to them during a recent interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, are beginning to ask questions. Seven-year-old Lincoln and 5-year-old Delta are at the age when the topic of the birds and the bees is starting to pop up, and, like so many other parents, Bell and Shepard are trying their best to ward off the awkwardness and keep it real. But that doesn't mean they're not sometimes caught off guard.

On Bell's appearance on the talk show, she told Colbert that she and her husband, Shepard, had a rare moment to spend some alone time out of the house since quarantine began. When they were leaving their daughters with her sister to go for a walk, their older daughter, Lincoln, stopped them with a question.

“On our way out the door, [Lincoln] stood in the door and she goes, ‘Uh, are you going to do a sex?’” Bell said. “It caught us by surprise."

The Good Place actor noted that they have had a sex talk with her in the past, “but she's never—we've never—talked about us doing it!" So, what are two comedian parents to do when confronted with an awkward sex question from their 7-year-old daughter? “

Dax just really quickly said, 'We'd love to, but it's illegal publicly. Bye!' and closed the door," Bell said. LOL.

As Bell said, she and Shepard have had ~the sex talk~ before, and though it can feel a bit awkward, Bell believes it’s so crucial for kids to understand. In a March 2020 interview on the Motherly Podcast, per E! News, Bell said, “I'm like, there is nothing wrong with knowing how the penis works and how the vagina works. I just don't understand the American shame in that. In fact, I think it equips them to understand pregnancy way better.”

“The agency they have over their bodies to say, 'Oh yeah, this is how it works...Daddy has a penis, mommy has a vagina. Here's how it works. And here's the part of daddy's DNA and the part of mommy's DNA that grows you like a seed,'” she said.

For fellow parents who are feeling awkward about the whole speech, Bell knows from experience that kids are "so bored by the second sentence." Then again, throwing nuggets of information before disappearing from the scene may be the best fellow parents can do when caught off guard. No shame!
