Jay Leno on why car sharing is like wife sharing

The car sharing market is positioned for some serious growth.

With an estimated 3.5 million members as of early this year, Navigant Research forecasts 14.8 million drivers will participate in these programs by 2020. That's despite the fact that there may be trash in the back seat, and the car might not even be available when you absolutely, positively must have Ben & Jerry's. Like now.

Despite some of these annoyances, companies like Zipcar are proving to be welcome options for those who don't have the space, money or need for their own set of wheels.

So, should you take part in this $1.1 billion industry? Here's what Jay Leno thinks of the car sharing economy.

Each week, Jay Leno shares his thoughts about hot topics in the auto industry. Tune in to "Jay Leno's Garage" for the first episode Oct. 7 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on CNBC.
