Jaguars lineman Jawaan Taylor hauls in massive 400-pound goliath grouper: 'Fish of a lifetime!'

Jawaan Taylor is getting his workouts in during the COVID-19 shutdown.

He has video evidence to prove it.

The Jacksonville Jaguars offensive lineman posted video on Twitter from a fishing trip off the coast of Jupiter, Florida. He hooked a whopper. And it put up a fight before Taylor was able to reel it in toward the boat.

‘Like pulling up a bus’

The fish was so big it started pulling the boat while Taylor was reeling it in.

“It’s like pulling up a bus,” Taylor said while struggling with the fish. Crew members on the boat estimated that it weighed 400 pounds.

When he finally reeled it in toward the boat, Taylor got a picture with his prize catch still in the water.

What is a goliath grouper?

Oceana describes the Atlantic goliath grouper as an ambush predator that lives along coral reefs and mangrove forests in the Atlantic Ocean. The conservation group says the fish is one of the largest predators in its habitat and can grow to up to 700 pounds. According to Oceana, its presence as a top predator results in healthier reef habitats.

Overfishing of goliath grouper in the 1970s and 80s prompted state and federal low prohibiting the harvest of the species in 1990. Listed as “vulnerable” by the World Conservation Union, its status has rebounded from “critically endangered” thanks to conservation efforts.

Taylor didn’t say if he kept or released the fish. But considering the species’ status — and the fact that the fish was bigger than him — here’s guessing he and the crew let it swim away after snapping the prize photo.
