Investors in Velan (TSE:VLN) have made a splendid return of 201% over the past three years

The most you can lose on any stock (assuming you don't use leverage) is 100% of your money. But when you pick a company that is really flourishing, you can make more than 100%. For example, the Velan Inc. (TSE:VLN) share price has soared 200% in the last three years. Most would be happy with that. Also pleasing for shareholders was the 140% gain in the last three months.

So let's investigate and see if the longer term performance of the company has been in line with the underlying business' progress.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

Velan became profitable within the last three years. Given the importance of this milestone, it's not overly surprising that the share price has increased strongly.

The image below shows how EPS has tracked over time (if you click on the image you can see greater detail).

A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that Velan shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 24% over one year. That certainly beats the loss of about 4% per year over the last half decade. We generally put more weight on the long term performance over the short term, but the recent improvement could hint at a (positive) inflection point within the business. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Velan better, we need to consider many other factors. For example, we've discovered 2 warning signs for Velan that you should be aware of before investing here.

Of course Velan may not be the best stock to buy. So you may wish to see this free collection of growth stocks.
