Investing in Westamerica Bancorporation (NASDAQ:WABC) a year ago would have delivered you a 32% gain

It's always best to build a diverse portfolio of shares, since any stock business could lag the broader market. Of course, the aim of the game is to pick stocks that do better than an index fund. Westamerica Bancorporation (NASDAQ:WABC) has done well over the last year, with the stock price up 28% beating the market return of 26% (not including dividends). Unfortunately the longer term returns are not so good, with the stock falling 20% in the last three years.

Now it's worth having a look at the company's fundamentals too, because that will help us determine if the long term shareholder return has matched the performance of the underlying business.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

During the last year Westamerica Bancorporation grew its earnings per share (EPS) by 14%. This EPS growth is significantly lower than the 28% increase in the share price. So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it a year ago.

It's probably worth noting that the CEO is paid less than the median at similar sized companies. It's always worth keeping an eye on CEO pay, but a more important question is whether the company will grow earnings throughout the years. This free interactive report on Westamerica Bancorporation's earnings, revenue and cash flow is a great place to start, if you want to investigate the stock further.

What About Dividends?

When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, Westamerica Bancorporation's TSR for the last 1 year was 32%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.

A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that Westamerica Bancorporation shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 32% over one year. That's including the dividend. That certainly beats the loss of about 1.0% per year over the last half decade. The long term loss makes us cautious, but the short term TSR gain certainly hints at a brighter future. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk.
