Billionaire Mark Cuban has a history of picking some good investments. While he’s mainly known for his private equity investments on the “Shark Tank” TV show and his previous ownership stake in the Dallas Mavericks, he’s also mentioned investing in several stocks and cryptocurrencies that may have netted him large returns.

While Cuban’s investments were likely larger, even dropping $10,000 into some of his favorite picks would have netted hundreds of thousands for savvy investors.

Here’s how much you would have right now if you had invested $10,000 into each of these companies with Cuban.

Note: Since Mark Cuban is a private individual, not a fund, he isn’t legally required to disclose all of his investments. This means we don’t always know exactly when Cuban makes his investments. However, based on his statements, his interviews and other publicly available information, we can get a decent estimate for some of his returns.

Netflix (NFLX)

On Oct. 17, 2014, Mark Cuban tweeted that he was buying Netflix shares. He stated that he was doing so because he believed the company may be bought out, due to its relatively low stock price and high potential. Replying to another user, he said that the current price of Netflix’s stock was “a bargain” — and he was right.

Netflix was never bought out, but Cuban’s investment paid off. On Oct. 17, 2014, Netflix’s split-adjusted stock price was $51.01.

Almost 10 years later, on May 22, 2024, the stock had grown 1,156% to $640.47. This means that $10,000 invested into Netflix alongside Cuban would have grown to $125,600 today.

Amazon (AMZN)

In 2019, Mark Cuban told Fox Business Network that he had invested more than $1 billion in Amazon stock and invested at a split-adjusted price between $25 and $35 per share. This likely places his Amazon investment somewhere between June 2015 and May 2016. This is another investment paid off for Cuban — Amazon is currently worth $183.13 as of May 22, 2024. If Cuban had bought the stock at an average of $30 per share, he would have made a 510% return.

If you had invested $10,000 along with Cuban, you would have $61,000 today. This isn’t as large as his $1 billion investment, but it’s still a decent chunk of change.

Live Nation Entertainment (LYV)

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Cuban revealed that he had begun investing in Live Nation Entertainment, owner of Ticketmaster and Live Nation. His rationale was that people would want to go to live events again once the pandemic ended and that the stock was cheap at the time.

At the time of the interview, Live Nation Entertainment’s stock was $42.85. Four years later, on May 22, 2024, the stock closed at $101.40, a 137% increase. If you’d invested $10,000 into Live Nation’s stock with Cuban during the pandemic, you would have $23,700 today.

Injective (INJ)

In April 2021, Cuban participated in a funding round for the cryptocurrency project Injective. The project is a technical framework that other companies can use to power cryptocurrency and cryptocurrency derivative exchanges and other decentralized finance services.

We don’t know if Cuban is still invested in Injective since only the dates of the funding rounds and his initial involvement are public knowledge. At the time of Cuban’s investment, Injective’s token was worth $14.23. It reached a high of $53 in March 2024 — an increase of 272%. If you had invested $10,000 with Mark Cuban in the INJ token and sold at the recent peak, you would have $37,200 today.

The Dallas Mavericks

The Dallas Mavericks were one of Cuban’s best investments. In 2000, he paid $285 million for his majority stake in the NBA team. When he sold it in 2024, his share was worth about $3.5 billion, which means he got a return of 1,128% on his investment. If you had been able to invest $10,000 into the Mavericks in 2000 and sold at the same time as Cuban, you would have $122,800 today.

You probably wouldn’t have been able to invest in the Mavericks at the time, though, since the team had no publicly available shares. However, nowadays, sports investing is beginning to open up to regular investors. Some sports teams, such as Manchester United and the Atlanta Braves, have listed their stock on public exchanges, where anyone can buy it.

MLB, the NBA, the NHL and MLB have also started allowing private equity investments in their teams. If you’re an accredited investor (meaning you have permission from the Securities and Exchange Commission to invest in less regulated assets), you can invest your money in a variety of sports teams through a private equity firm [12].

Pick Investments Like Mark Cuban

Do you want to pick investments like Mark Cuban? Here are a few things you should consider.

  • Focus on profitable businesses: Cuban has said businesses should avoid raising capital when possible and focus on being profitable as early as possible.

  • Look for alternative investments: Many of Cuban’s publicly known investments are in private companies and alternative investments such as cryptocurrencies or the Dallas Mavericks. This approach helps him spread out his risks while also diving into new and exciting markets that could lead to big returns.

  • Be comfortable with a bit of risk: Cuban has said that it can be a good idea to set aside 10% of your investment capital to put into riskier assets that could have a larger potential upside. However, he doesn’t recommend going above 10% — that way, losing the money won’t heavily impact your finances if things go sour.
