Introducing Unit (NYSE:UNT), The Stock That Tanked 77%

We’re definitely into long term investing, but some companies are simply bad investments over any time frame. We really hate to see fellow investors lose their hard-earned money. Spare a thought for those who held Unit Corporation (NYSE:UNT) for five whole years – as the share price tanked 77%. We also note that the stock has performed poorly over the last year, with the share price down 24%. Even worse, it’s down 10% in about a month, which isn’t fun at all. Importantly, this could be a market reaction to the recently released financial results. You can check out the latest numbers in our company report.

Given that Unit didn’t make a profit in the last twelve months, we’ll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. That’s because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.

Over half a decade Unit reduced its trailing twelve month revenue by 18% for each year. That puts it in an unattractive cohort, to put it mildly. So it’s not that strange that the share price dropped 26% per year in that period. This kind of price performance makes us very wary, especially when combined with falling revenue. Of course, the poor performance could mean the market has been too severe selling down. That can happen.

The chart below shows how revenue and earnings have changed with time, (if you click on the chart you can see the actual values).

A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 7.9% in the last year, Unit shareholders lost 24%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. However, the loss over the last year isn’t as bad as the 26% per annum loss investors have suffered over the last half decade. We would want clear information suggesting the company will grow, before taking the view that the share price will stabilize. If you would like to research Unit in more detail then you might want to take a look at whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in the company.

We will like Unit better if we see some big insider buys. While we wait, check out this free list of growing companies with considerable, recent, insider buying.
